It dawned on me recently that all the major spaces I have left to complete in our house (minus the basement which is its own thing entirely), are bedrooms. We recently swapped out furniture in our Master Bedroom to at least get a fresh foundation in there, but it needs so much more personality. The guest room also needs some attention, and my step-daughter’s bedroom is in major need of an entire makeover.
For our own bedroom, I’ve been dreaming of lots of layered pattern on the bed, and resisting the temptation to wallpaper yet another space. But, after seeing Erica of Honestly WTF’s guest bedroom update with its gorgeous layers of orange and blue, I’m SO tempted to really go for it.
Layering like this is not for amateurs! If you don’t know where to start, it can be really intimidating. The most important rule is scale. See how the wallpaper pattern doesn’t compete with the headboard because one is smaller and more geometric while the other is larger and more natural? That’s perfect layering right there.
Then the rest is filled in with more ‘solid’ tones (the all blue medallion pillow for example). It’s not an exact science, and usually when I’m playing with pattern I either have tons of fabric samples that I work with before ordering custom pieces, or I order a bunch of pillows, bedding, etc at once so I can play with it to find the perfect mix.
I love how they repeated the wallpaper pattern in that small lumbar pillow and brought in a teeny bit of unexpected pink! Also, let’s talk about layering art on wallpaper for a sec. It’s not for the faint of heart! Making sure the artwork has a thicker frame or matte around it is important so that there is breathing room between the pattern of the wallpaper and the artwork itself. I actually have a whole post dedicated the topic right here! It’s one of my faves.
I think keeping the rest of the space in one color is the best way to go here, especially in a smaller room! But the mix of pattern is still strong!
