When you hear the word ‘beach house’, especially in conjunction with the location of Martha’s Vineyard, I don’t know about you but I immediately think of a house straight out of a Nancy Meyers film – all cozy and overstuffed sofas with blue and white stripes. But today’s designers are changing all that, as is evidenced by some of the past beach houses we’ve featured.
So, in honor of Summer being officially here, I thought today was the perfect day to showcase a new style: the modern shaker cove house. It’s a little bit beach house, a little bit country house, and a whole lot of craftsmanship.
To be clear: there’s not much in this home that screams ‘beach house’ to me. Apart from the subtle blue touches in the sitting room by the fireplace, and maybe the loungy blue sofas in a den (which you’ll see momentarily), it’s really the white shiplap that lends itself to this title. The rest is very mid-century, but very updated.
What I love most about this home is the use of multiple wood tones. How some people have a fear of mixing metals, I have a fear of layering wood tones. Perhaps because it reminds me of too many poorly designed homes in the Pacific Northwest. It’s an element that really has to be done right, and this design really nails it.
Speaking of design – the whole space was created by Shelter Collective – a design duo that has mastered the art of collaboration, obviously. The tonal wood pendant lighting here is one of my favorite elements in the home, but overall I’d say that the kitchen might just be my favorite space in the home as well.
Elsewhere in the house, there seem to be cozy moments in abundance. I’m especially into this sofa configuration. I want to do something similar in our basement asap, so we can hang out down there all summer long!
The blue seems to be a reoccurring theme in the house as the only color to make a bold appearance. Here, on the landing, and in what I assume is the master bedroom…
How unique is this floating bed? I’m not always into this idea, but it really works here, being so grounded by that heavy natural wood. The patchwork indigo curtains are gorgeous too, and I really love the texture in the rug. Most if this isn’t inherently my style, but I think all of it works together so beautifully!
Remember when I said the kitchen might be my favorite room in the house? Wellllll…. this shower is a close second. I love the soft green tile and the wood slatted floors. The only problem is that I’d end up with a massive water bill because I’m quite sure I’d never want to leave this space.
Elsewhere throughout the upstairs, soft patterns make appearances in the guest bedrooms and baths and I love it all. The attention to fun details (like that side table and miniature light) make these more minimalist rooms still feel quite special.
Oh, and before you go. Don’t forget the outside! This heavenly mud room (rare words to pair together, I’ll admit), will lead you out to the most gorgeous exterior…
