Design dilemmas abound in my new house, but the biggest one might be the challenge I posted on my instagram yesterday – the Spanish tiles that line our entire basement floor.
I knew even before I moved in that the trick to making them work would be going with a bright black and white palette that could simultaneously feel modern yet ‘tropical’. And then I recalled the Majorca home of Malene Birger…
Her at-home style reflects her clothing line to perfection. (Can’t you picture yourself lounging in this dress… in this room?)
But back to the tiles.
Ours don’t have that mix of cream in them (really wish they did) but the eclectic, worldly style all in black, white and wood is exactly what I had in mind for making this thing work. But there are other details giving me ideas here too…
The artwork. The use of white white white. The textures. And that gorgeous black trim around the windows (that is SO happening.)
She even makes Spanish tile counters look good! (Our downstairs kitchen counters are laminate – a whole other challenge to embrace!). Another item I’m realizing will be a necessity – stripes!
They make things feel fresh, don’t you think? Of course, styling is a big part of this too – using items that blend with the tile instead of fighting it, but I do think we could go a little more modern in some parts and get away with it.
The bedroom is devoid of tile, but I had to show it to you anyway. Because – you know – it’s amazing.
I’m digging the pops of saturated blue and little bits of yellow too…
So what do you think? Should I work with the tile, or should we rip it out? We’ve also been considering staining it white or a dark rich grey… anyone else tackle that project? It’s all so overwhelming, but exciting to think of the possibilities too!
