With a pastel palette and use of mixed materials, this modern home renovation is showing off quite a few current trends! While it might be a bit much to incorporate all of them into your home, we’ll be keeping some of these unique details in mind for our next home project.

First off – the entire home uses tons of tile. The style reminds me of the 90’s but in the best way. And so do rounded edges which are definitely having their moment not only in architectural detail like this one, but in furniture too (more on that in the coming weeks!).

The kitchen uses a pretty big mix of materials…

But I have to say I kind of love this idea of taking paneling up to the ceiling. We’ve been seeing a lot more use of shiplap as a trend, but any paneling will do. I like how it runs throughout the long space, connecting the rooms nicely. Rather than just having a white wall, this brings in more visual texture and adds to the graphic nature of the space.

Back to those concrete details… how cool is this moment where the island runs into the flooring of the living room? Breaking up wood floor with detail like this is definitely a modern trend we’ve seen emerge more and more. Whether it’s concrete, tile, or metal, it’s a nice way to add something unique to a home lacking in character.

Breathing room people. It’s a wonderful thing. Not every white space needs to be filled with art. Sometimes, it lends itself nicely to a quiet little moment, and captures the minimalist trend nicely. (How many of you made purging and minimalizing part of your new years resolution?)

You’ll see this pink and blue palette is carried throughout the home nicely as well! Bonus points for it not feeling like a nursery at all. That palette is an intimidating one to tackle.

The indoor outdoor flow here is awesome, but what I really love is how they brought that tile outside! (Told ya there was lots of tile in this home!) We don’t see much of this in the Pacific Northwest – too much opportunity for mold – but this specific style of bench seating I’ve seen a ton of in Australian design, and I dig it. Makes me want to move back to LA where you can get away with this sort of thing!

And then there are the bathrooms…

Some of you may remember our post on the trend of black fixtures in the kitchen and bath as an alternate to the sea of brass. Well, here is a perfect example of where it works best. I applaud the use of black accents in this home in general, actually. It would be really tempting (and obvious) to keep most trims white with their style, but adding black is so much more bold. Square tile is another trend we’re seeing as a modern alternative to subway.

I especially like it with this baby blue! Now that’s one fresh bathroom! You’ll notice that use of raw blonde wood throughout the home too. A modern trend that’s been happening for some time now, I don’t see it going away anytime soon!

Now if I could only take a nice long soak in that tub.

Of these modern touches, which would you consider incorporating into your own home? While I don’t see us being able to use a ton of these in our very classic interior, I do love that curved concrete moment…
