If there’s anything that can make me stop mid-scroll on instagram, it’s a well designed kitchen. And if the bold yellow backsplash tile didn’t get you, then the gorgeous rich green island should. Or maybe it was the combination of all the materials together? Because this kitchen designed by Lynn K. Leonidas has it all.
You’ve gotta have confidence and guts to do color in not just one but two areas of a kitchen. Let alone a color as strong as that yellow. But, man does it work! The variations of tone in the zellige tile is part of the reason I think it’s not so overwhelming. You’re not getting an intense pattern from the grout, but rather a beautiful mosaic of happy color. The modern cottage style cabinetry is also a unique choice! I like the way it adds some charm and tradition to the bold space.
There are also so many great little details here, like the petite hardware that doesn’t compete with the rest of the space, or the delicate corded pendants. The only pieces I don’t love for this space are the barstools, to be honest. They feel just a little jarring, and I would have liked to see some simple backless stools here instead. The white feels a bit too clean to me, whereas a quiet wood tone would have blended more – or perhaps a creamy white? – while also popping against that gorgeous island color.
Where I do like the use of a modern material is the Bertoia dining chairs against this oak table! This little dining area sits right across from the kitchen, and the artwork (by ethan caflisch) is just perfect – pulling in a hint of that yellow. And that gorgeous workstead lighting fixture is such a stunner!
And also – because I know you’ll ask – the colors in the kitchen were custom mixed, but Lynn noted on her instagram that
“For those who’ve asked, these cabinetry colors are a custom conversion varnish finish. The closest paint match is: Sherwin Williams SW6155 Rice Grain. The closest paint match for the island is: Sherwin Williams SW0041 Dard Hunter Green.”
