When we arrived in the Costa del Sol as a part of our Mediterranean Cruise, I knew right away which excursion we would choose for our adventure that day. Marbella is known as a destination for the ‘jet set’ which to me meant it was likely to have great shopping and delicious dining. What I didn’t expect was how absolutely charming the Old Town – or Casco Antiguo – was… and then of course, there was the beach!
The second we hopped off the bus, we headed down to the water to check out the scenery, and we were not disappointed. The day was ours to do what we wanted with, so we immediately started exploring the little shops, resorts and restaurants that lined the boardwalk stretching down the gorgeous coastline. The weather was absolutely perfect. The beaches weren’t overly crowded at 11am, and everyone seemed to be operating at a leisurely pace…
But how could you not with a view like this?
We wandered up through the Parque de Alameda where plenty of shaded, tiled benches and fountains provided the perfect spot for enjoying a quick espresso before we crossed the main street and headed into the Old Town shopping area!
When you enter this part of the city – let go of any temptation to have an agenda, and just wander. Trust me. It’s not huge, so you’ll eventually see it all, and it’s much more fun to take your time and happen upon happy little moments, like the pots lining the high walls and balconies! You musn’t forget to look up when strolling these streets!
When you’re ready for a break, park yourself near the Plaza de los Naranjos for some churros at Churreria Ramon! Yes, it’s a bit touristy, but it’s delicious, and their fresh juices make you feel a little less guilty about the fried dough you’ve just devoured.
The shopping here is fantastic. This little spot – Tanah Lot – had my favorite discovery. Nope, not the wall full of scarves…the woven rattan bicycle out front! I took like 20 photos of it, no joke. We also ran into a few other shops, but my favorite was Agua Marina – a small store filled to the brim with woodblock textile and clothing for such reasonable pricing, I was paralyzed and didn’t buy a single thing, and forgot to take a single photo.
One of the things I loved the most about taking a cruise was that you quickly learn what destinations you want to return to and which you’ve probably had your fill of in the 24-hours you’re there. Marbella, I’m coming back for you!
